Metropolis, IL & Paducah, KY  - The National Quilt Museum of the United States and the Metropolis, Illinois Tourism are proud to combine forces for the second annual Super City - Quilt City Connection, A Celebration of the Arts between Two Cities
September 11-12, 2010.

An assortment of exhibits and activities will be held in both cities.  Quilts by a local guild combine with artist and culinary demonstrations for an event of super measure at the Harrah's Riverfront Event Center in Metropolis, while exhibits, demonstrations and lectures by known experts will be featured at The National Quilt Museum.

Activities include:
SATURDAY, SEPT. 11 in Metropolis  (Riverfront Event Center)

  • 9 a.m.-Noon:  Best-Selling AQS Author Sally Terry to conduct class: "Hooked on Feathers."  Must pre-register.  Call 877-424-5025. Cost for the class is $30 plus $5 for the study guide.
  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Massac Quilters Guild Quilt Show. $2 donation.  Show also features the Pilgrim/Roy Challenge Quilts exhibit.  Quilting & Artist vendors, Demonstrations and chances to win door prizes.
  • Super Block Challenge.  Contest open to all quilters.  Visit www.massacquilters.org for entry information. Deadline to enter is Sept. 5.
  • 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:  Culinary Creations - Learn from the professionals!
    11 a.m. - WKYQ Personality "The Bear"
    11:45 a.m. - The Pasta House Co. owner, Bob Hoppman
    12:30 p.m. - Artisan's Kitchen - Karla Lawrence & David Jones

SATURDAY, SEPT. 11 in Paducah  (The National Quilt Museum)

  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Quilt Exhibits: Regular Admission.
    Museum Gallery Tour: 1 p.m.
    - Free guided tour with paid admission.
    A Horse's Tale: A Juried Exhibit on the Theme of Horses, featuring quilts by guest artist Shirley P. Kelly
    The Machine Age of Quilting: Treadle to Computer, featuring quilts from the collections of Pat Holly and Sue Nickels.
  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fabric Swap Meet!  Bring your unwanted ½ yards of fabric or Fat Quarters to swap for new treasures, or just donate them to The National Quilt Museum for use in future free educational activities.
  • 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. "Celebration Quilts" Sale. Fiber artists with quilts in the museum's collection donated small quilts to raise funds for The National Quilt Museum. More than 30 quilts remain available for you to add to your private collection.
  • 10 - 2 pm:  Demonstrations by the Yo Yo Club of Paducah. Free
  • 10 - 2 pm:  Learn how to do these three techniques; Appliqué, Felting and Origami Bow Tie Quilt Block. Free
  • 2:30-4 p.m.: Quilter, author and instructor Mary L. Hackett will conduct a lecture and demonstration on how she created her quilt, "Fear of the Dark." $5 fee. A special black-light tour for lecture participants will follow inside museum gallery at 5 p.m. $5

SUNDAY, SEPT. 12 in Metropolis  (Harrah's Riverfront Event Center)

  • 10:30 a.m.: Sue Bouchard, from Quilt in a Day, presents free lecture, "Quilts in my Closet."

  • Noon:  Luncheon & Lecture with AQS Best Selling Book Author Sally Terry - $15 for lunch & lecture "Running Specialty Threads - from Traditional to Long Arm."  $5 for lecture only at 12:30 p.m..  Reservations required by Sept. 3 for luncheon. 
  • 2:30 p.m.:  Joy O'Keefe presents a free lecture: "Binding, Edges and Other Finishing Touches" and "Recovering from Katrina". 
  • 4 p.m.  Massac Quilters Guild Show's People's Choice winners announced.

    • 1 - 5 p.m. Baste-In!  Don't have the room or expertise to finish your quilt? Bring your quilt top, batting, backing and pins, & we will pin baste it for you for $5 or ½ yard of fabric. Registration required. 270-442-8856.
    • 1 - 5 p.m. Celebration Quilts Sale. Fiber artists with quilts in the museum's collection made and donated small quilts to raise funds for The National Quilt Museum. More than 30 quilts remain available for you to add to your private collection.
    • 1- 5 p.m.: Organize Your Fabric! Elaine Braun shows you how using Polar Notions Mini Bolt method.
    • 2:30-3:30 p.m.:  Quilt Care & Conservation lecture by Judy Schwender - Schwender is the Curator of Collections/Registrar of The National Quilt Museum and has a degree in textile history. Free.

Art events and exhibits also flourish around the region on September 11-12 giving visitors much more to see and do! Community art and other events include:

•·  Saturday, September 11- 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Paducah Stitch  ‘N Quilt Guild Quiltfest at Broadway Church of Christ, 2855 Broadway, Paducah.   Annual guild show featuring vendors, demonstrations and quilts galore.  Admission donation requested.

•·  Paducah's Lowertown Art District 2nd Saturday.  Art galleries open late till 8 p.m. and feature special events. Jefferson-Park Ave., 3rd St.-9th St.

•·   Living History.   10am-4pm Saturday at Fort Massac State Park.  The French and Indian War period living historians will present displays and interpretive programs on the 18th century taverne life and brewing.   Free.

Super Museum and Americana Hollywood Museum
in Metropolis.  Visitors receive half price admission with their free souvenir Super City Quilt City Connection button available at both the museum and the Riverfront Event Center.
